North Carolina Toy DriveI am so proud to be part of PC Construction’s team in North Carolina! The last few weeks have been a flurry of activity for myself and my fellow employee owners as we spearheaded a Hurricane Helene relief toy drive to spread cheer to the children of Western North Carolina.

In total, over $13,500 worth of gifts were gathered from PC employees, their families and our very generous trade partners and suppliers. All gifts were donated to the Black Mountain Home and Eliada.

The Black Mountain home had a landslide destroy all four of their recreational buildings, dining halls, and guest cabins. PC was one of several sponsors who provided gifts for the 63 children currently residing in the facility. While Eliada sustained much less damage, they currently have 467 children in their residence, ranging in age from newborn to 21 years. All children will receive two or three gifts from our donation alone, and we hope others participate to make this a Christmas they won’t forget!

Thank you to my fellow team members – Erica Baldwin, Erik Marshall, Bayden Wilson, Nick Swan and Joseph Berrigan – for jumping in to make this event a success. And a special thank you to all of our donors and partners who showed such kindness and generosity this holiday season, including but not limited to: Chinchor Electric, Beltway Paving, Universal Painting, WW Enroughty, Smart Electric, Cohrane Steel, Continental Fire & Sprinkler Company, Commercial Doors & Hardware, Womack Electric, Pleasant Mount Welding, Halliday Products, Inc., Lopez Rebar, American Layout & Land Surveying, LLC, Cardinal Building Systems, Noble Specialties, McDade Waterworks, Ferguson, Felker Brothers, Dixie Metals, Lake Electric, Fountain Electric, MB Haynes Electric, Llamas Coatings, Hickory Mechanical, Dickinson Hauling, Superior Mechanical, Piedmont Plumbing Group, Heyward of Charlotte, EW2 Environmental, Fortech, Revere Controls, Piedmont Automation.

Happy holidays from the North Carolina team!

PC Construction Team Fundraising for Travis Mills FoundationThis past Saturday, the Maine-based PC team and families once again came together at the Portland International Jetport to test our strength to benefit the Travis Mills Foundation. The task: pull an 80-ton Boeing 757 FedEx Jet 20 feet as fast as you can. The competition was fierce, and the PC Plane Pullers came in at the middle of the leaderboard with a pull of 8.1 seconds.

PC’s fundraising efforts took off strong and soared to the top. With generous support from family, friends and business partners, PC landed in fourth place among 30 teams for our fundraising efforts (all puns intended!).

The Travis Mills Foundation supports post-911 recalibrated veterans and their families overcome physical and emotional obstacles and strengthen their families through a variety of programs. In total, the plane pull raised close to $200,000 to help support the foundation.

Congratulations to all who came out and made this event such a success!

A team of 10 PC women from the Vermont region recently participated in Habitat for Humanity’s annual Women Build Week. This annual campaign focuses on bringing women together to build stronger communities. Women and children are the most likely to be affected by poor living conditions, and events like Women Build provide the opportunity for women to serve their communities while expanding their construction skills.

PC women from both operations and office roles spent the day working on a duplex build site in Burlington, Vermont. Women make up about 10% of the construction industry nationally, and at PC we are just above this average. It is not uncommon to be the only woman on a team or jobsite, so having a crew comprised completely of women was really exciting.

We worked with the affectionally self-named “Geezer Crew” on this build. It was inspiring to work with a group of retirees who have become long-time volunteers for Habitat. Their passion for building and giving back was evident as they led our crew through several projects, including setting up scaffolding for a scheduled roofing crew, framing and roofing front porches, installing ZIP sheathing and various other tasks to progress the build. It was really exciting to see the progress that we made at the end of the day, and we look forward to participating in this event again next year!

Corporate Cup TeamLast Thursday, a team of 14 PC Construction employee owners participated in the 41st annual Vermont Corporate Cup Challenge, one of Vermont’s oldest and largest 5K races. The event brings over 2,000 Vermonters together in Montpelier to promote physical fitness in the workplace and at home.

We set out on the course on one of Vermont’s first warm (and very humid) spring evenings. This race is always different than most where the finish line isn’t necessarily a goal but a destination with time taken along the way to enjoy the company of our colleagues outside of work. This year, it especially satisfying to see our state capital bustling with activity after the devastating floods last summer.

Thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy this year’s Corporate Cup. I, for one, am already looking forward to next year!

Last Wednesday, PC’s Atlanta-based team spent the workday a little differently than usual – at the home of longtime Atlanta residents, Jimmy and Annie Harris. Both now retired, their home has been a place of comfort and stability for nearly 40 years. With Jimmy facing an upcoming surgery that will limit his mobility, this family needed some essential changes to their home. PC teamed up with Rebuilding Together Atlanta to paint, complete minor repairs, and build a new ramp to ensure Jimmy’s safety and continued independence at home.

It was so rewarding for our crew to see the impact these changes would make on their lives. We will never forget their smiles and how truly grateful they were for the support during their time of need. I am also so thankful to work with such caring and supportive people at PC who didn’t hesitate to take the time out of their busy lives to give back to a family in need.

Rebuilding Together Atlanta is an incredible organization, and we are grateful for all they do for the community. For over 30 years, they’ve been dedicated to making high-risk homes safe and healthy while helping low-income senior and veteran homeowners age safely in place. As a result, more than 1,000 homes in Atlanta neighborhoods have received needed renovations with the help of thousands of individuals who have donated their time, energy and talent.

This is just another example of how we are BUILDING STRONGER, TOGETHER every single day.

Food Bank Networking EventLast Friday, I had the pleasure of attending the Good Shepherd Food Bank (GSFB) annual Coffee & Collaboration event in Portland, Maine, with my fellow PC employee owner, Senior Project Manager Mark Donovan. This event gave us the opportunity to learn about the organization and how PC Construction can help meet their needs. Last fall, PC raised funds to benefit the GSFB, but decided we wanted to do more to serve our fellow Mainers in need. Between networking with other local businesses and chatting with members of the GSFB staff, we learned that the food bank distributed 33.6 million meals in 2023 and procured 3.6 million pounds of food locally to be distributed to food pantries around the state. Very impressive!

It was an honor to listen to a presentation from GSFB’s new president, Heather Paquette, and to discuss how our unique skills in the construction industry can help the organization on other levels.

The GSFB is a non-profit organization serving our community to help fight food insecurity throughout the State of Maine. Founded in 1981, their mission is to help eliminate hunger by providing access to nutritious and culturally relevant food for people in need, building strong community partnerships, and mobilizing the public in the fight to end hunger.

If you are experiencing food insecurity in Maine, visit www.gsfb.org and click ‘Find Food’.

Today I had the extreme pleasure of presenting the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi with a retired PC truck to support their extensive food pantry operation.

The Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi is the longest continuous kinship-related Abenaki tribal community in the United States. One of the many services they provide is food assistance to ensure all Abenaki families have access to healthy and nutritious meals. Each month, they support over 500 clients in their communities and rely entirely on funding from grants and donations.

The truck donation will eliminate costs of transporting food donations, allowing more money to be directed to the food and products needed by the Abenaki community. But it also means something more than that to PC. John Lavoie, a longtime PC superintendent who is retiring in July after 45 years with the company, is also a member of the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi Tribal Board and is actively involved in the organization’s efforts. We are so proud to be able to support John’s heritage and passions with this donation – it is just a tiny token of our appreciation for his incredible work leading successful PC construction projects for over four decades!

“In our Native American tradition, we are taught to care for our community – our friends, family and neighbors – whether they are a member of our tribe or not,” said Debbie Dubois Lavoie, manager of the food pantry (and John’s loving wife!). “We share what we can as best as we can and with PC Construction’s help, we can continue our fight against food insecurity. Our hearts are full and now our shelves will be filled more efficiently and cost effectively. We are so grateful for PC’s generosity.”

City of Bunnell Clean-up Day PC Construction VolunteersOn January 27, PC partnered with the City of Bunnell, Florida, as a sponsor of their annual Cleanup Day. A total of 34 volunteers, including 14 PC employee owners and their family members, collected nearly 2,200 pounds of trash from City neighborhoods and roads. This event is part of the City’s efforts to keep their stormwater system clean and reduce the amount of trash that ends up in local water.

The PC team was excited to support the Cleanup Day efforts. We are all invested in the community in which we live and work and enjoy making our home a place everyone can be proud of. Clean water is also near and dear to the PC team and is the focus of much of our work in Florida. From Bunnell to West Palm Beach, we are constructing water and wastewater infrastructure improvements to support our growing communities.

Thank you to everyone who joined in – we’ll see you all next year!

Groundbreaking for Residences at Chestnut affordable housing facility Yesterday PC Construction gathered with our partners – Lincoln Avenue Communities and Market Square Architects – along with a host of dignitaries to celebrate the construction of New Hampshire’s latest multi-family residential development. The new Residences at Chestnut facility, located in the Central Business District of Manchester, features two mid-rise buildings offering a total of 142 studio, one- and two-bedroom affordable housing units. Upon completion, the project will help meet the critical housing need in the greater Manchester area.

The modern housing complex includes amenities such as off-street parking, resident storage, a pet spa, shared workspaces, a community kitchen and gathering space, a rooftop deck and lounge, a fitness center as well as outdoor green space, walking paths, and an enclosed dog park.

To celebrate the start of construction, PC, Lincoln Avenue Communities and Market Square Architects, along with other investors, joined together to present Families in Transition of Manchester with a $10,000 donation to support their tireless efforts to deliver housing and services to people in need. This support, along with the new Residences at Chestnut facility, truly brings together a wholistic commitment to providing affordable housing to meet community need.Donation to Families in Transition at the groundbreaking for the Residences at Chestnut affordable housing facility

WomenOn Tuesday, I was proud to be part of a team of PC women that joined forces with Habitat for Humanity for Women Build 2023. The group – which included professionals from our office, our project management teams, and our craft workforce – took a break from their PC Construction responsibilities for the day to help construct a house in Colchester, Vermont. From framing, prepping for roof insulation and setting backer board to installing deck railings and windows, great progress was made, bringing this house one step closer to move-in day for a family in need.

This is my third Women Build event and it is so rewarding. I enjoy coming together with my fellow women in construction teammates to put our skills to work for the greater good.

On Saturday, Rokeby Museum and PC Construction President and CEO Matt Cooke cut the ribbon on the Museum’s new collections storage facility. The building, which was unveiled as the PC Construction Collections Building, is in honor of PC’s role as the museum’s Preservation Sponsor.

PC became a Preservation Sponsor for Rokeby Museum in 2021, donating time and materials to complete several high-priority maintenance projects on the historic site. Moving into 2022, PC’s Special Projects Group built the new storage facility to house the museum’s collection of 19th and 20th century artifacts. Teaming with us on this work were longtime partners, DuBois & King, Waterman Siteworks, SD Ireland and Omega Electric, all who also provided in-kind services and materials to help make this work a success.

“Rokeby Museum is beyond grateful for the support of PC Construction. They truly understand the importance of preserving the history of this site, and their contributions enable the museum to protect the Robinson family’s legacy of abolition, art, and agriculture for future generations,” said Lindsay Houpt-Varner, Director of Rokeby Museum.

“We are fortunate to have such an incredible landmark right here in our own backyard,” said PC President and CEO Matt Cooke. “It is so gratifying to know that our work will help ensure future generations can continue to visit the Rokeby Museum to learn about racism, social justice issues, and Vermont’s role in the Abolitionist movement.”

We are coming up on the 12-year anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene when Vermont was submersed in unprecedented flood water. More than 3,500 homes and businesses were impacted and 500 miles of state roads were heavily damaged or washed away altogether. Among the areas hardest hit was Waterbury, Vermont, where 1,500 state workers were displaced at the Vermont State Office Complex when flooding made the buildings uninhabitable. In stepped the PC Construction and Freeman French Freeman team to help the State bring the complex back to life right where it always was – in the heart of the community.

As part of the $100 million redevelopment of the 100-acre site, extensive flood prevention measures were incorporated into all new and existing buildings, including elevating the structures to above the 500-year flood level.

Those efforts stood the ultimate test this week when over eight inches of rain fell in parts of Vermont. Dams threatened to overflow, the interstate was shut down, and some communities were completely cut off from the rest of the state. Waterbury was once again under water as the banks of the Winooski River overflowed, creeping closer and closer to the Vermont State Office Complex (see image). But this time, the complex was prepared, and the flood prevention measures proved successful.

There is still much work ahead for Vermonters. For now, we are thankful that the extensive planning taken over a decade ago helped minimize the devastation of this rainfall event for the Waterbury community.
