Ferrisburgh and South Burlington, VT – Rokeby Museum and PC Construction announced that they have continued their partnership to complete urgently-needed work to one of the best-documented Underground Railroad sites in the country.

PC Construction became a Preservation Sponsor for Rokeby Museum in 2021 and completed several high-priority maintenance projects on the site, which hosts several structures that are over 200 years old. PC Construction’s employee-owners donated time and materials to add handrails, replace deteriorated porches, and replace aging plaster on interior walls. These repairs made the buildings safer and more accessible for visitors.

The team has continued working at the museum this year on more accessibility and safety improvements, including new handrails for the main house and handrails and ramps for the outbuildings. According to Justin Reed, Senior Project Manager for PC Construction, work is also underway to construct a new building that will more safely store the Museum’s collections.

PC Construction has teamed with long-time partners, DuBois & King, Waterman Siteworks, SD Ireland and Omega Electric, all who have also provided in-kind services and materials to help make this work a success.

“Rokeby Museum is honored to have PC Construction and its team of construction and engineering partners continue supporting our preservation efforts,” said Lindsay Varner, Director of Rokeby Museum. “Thanks to this experienced team, the Museum can continue its commitment to the long-term preservation and accessibility of this historic site.”

PC President and CEO Matt Cooke said, “We’re fortunate to have such an incredible landmark right here in our own backyard. We’re proud to continue our work to ensure that many future generations can continue to visit the Rokeby Museum to learn about racism, social justice issues, and Vermont’s role in the Abolitionist movement.”

Work began this summer and is expected to wrap up by the end of the year.

The PC teams building the University of Southern Maine’s new Portland Commons Residence Hall, McGoldrick Center for Student Success, and structured parking garage joined together to give back to the USM community. Food donations were collected and delivered to the Oakhurst Campus Food Pantry, which provides support to working students.

We are proud to have donated the essentials to allow four hard working students to provide Thanksgiving dinner for their families, with additional supplies helping restock the pantry’s shelves as we head into the holiday season.

Over 1,000 people and 800 pullers took to the runway at the Portland International Jetport on Saturday, October 22 to raise money for the Travis Mills Foundation. The Plane Pull event pits teams of 20 individuals against each other in the ultimate tug of war. The team that can pull the 80-ton FedEx plane 20 feet down the runway fastest, wins!

Among the 41 teams were the very aptly dressed and amped up PC Plane Pullers. While we didn’t record the fastest time, PC finished in the top third of the 39 teams with a time of 5.33 seconds and, more importantly, placed seventh for the most donations raised!

This event raised over $270,000 for the foundation, which helps veterans and their families recalibrate and recover after military service. The Travis Mills Foundation has served 882 families from 44 states at their nationally recognized retreat in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine.

Way to go PC for showing your community pride!

On Sunday morning, 30 PC employee owners, family members and pets took to Back Bay in Portland to show our ongoing commitment to the American Heart Association and the importance of heart health. After several years of “Virtual Walks”, it felt great to get back out there and participate in this event as a community.

The rain held off and we enjoyed the walk before heading to our Portland office for a celebratory cookout.

This year, the team rallied and raised over $10,000 to help support the important work of the American Heart Association. We are proud of the combined efforts of our team and partners. Thank you to everyone who help make this day such as huge success.

Every year right around Thanksgiving, our entire Seacoast team gets excited. We start to rally our families and trade partners, and put a plan into action to spread holiday cheer. This year was no different. Teaming with a local Toys for Tots, our Maine office team combined efforts with our University of Southern Maine and Edgebrook Residences project teams, and our amazing partners, Sewall Infrastructure and Manic Community Fitness, and the results were just outstanding. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, we loaded our tree with so many gifts and over $2,800 in donations.

The outpouring of support is a true testament to what happens when a great community comes together for a great cause. We are truly humbled to be amidst such a caring and compassionate group of people. I, for one, am sure there will be a lot of very happy little faces on Christmas morning because of everyone who chipped in to make this holiday season a little brighter.

Next week the PC Construction team will wrap up the finishing touches on preservation work at Vermont’s historic Rokeby Museum. PC pledged to sponsor the project eight months ago and has since invested over $65,000 to complete high-priority projects to make the over 200-year-old structures safer and more accessible.

Rokeby Museum is among the best-documented Underground Railroad sites in the country and provides a glimpse at four generations of the Robinson family and their contributions to the Abolition movement. The completion of this preservation work ensures that future generations can continue to visit the Rokeby Museum to learn about racism, social justice issues and Vermont’s role in the Abolitionist movement.

Our partners, DuBois & King and Waterman Siteworks, also generously supported this project and contributed to the intricate work required on the historic site. Thank you to the Museum visitors and staff for your patience during construction. We are excited to see the Museum in full swing!

This week we celebrate the inaugural Construction Inclusion Week. We are proud of our colleagues at Clark Construction, DPR, Gilbane, Mortenson, McCarthy, and Turner Construction who came together in 2020 to create a Time for a Change movement in our industry. One result of their efforts is an entire week when contractors across the world come together to build upon our daily diversity, equity, and inclusion work and bring greater awareness to diversity in our industry.

At PC, we are about 18 months into our reinvigorated DEI mindset, and I have to say I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and the change we continue to make. We’ve asked a lot of hard questions and we’ve challenged practices, polices, and belief systems that have been in place even since our founding years. We have a long way to go – there’s no question about that – but we’ve made tremendous progress to date.

What I am most excited about are the doors this journey has opened. Just in the last month alone, we have made significant progress on two age-old scenarios.

First, we opened the channels of communication across the company, providing PC email and electronic devices to craft employees for the first time in the company’s history. This one action closes the communications gap and ensures all employees – regardless of position or location – have access to the same information at the same time.

We also brought to fruition an equitable benefits package for our craft employees that resulted in more paid time off, additional disability and life insurance benefits, and increased eligibility opportunities. Every person on our team plays a vital role in our success, and they have the right to be rewarded equitably for doing so.

So why did it take so long to make these changes, and so many others? Because that’s the way it always was. We simply didn’t pay attention and didn’t question where, why, and when those decisions originated. It took one person – George Floyd – to bring it all into perspective. And we aren’t turning back.

So, let’s take this week to celebrate how far we’ve come and to continue our efforts to do better and be better every single day.

When I heard about the Touch-a-Truck-or-Treat event happening right across the street from our jobsite trailer on the Edgebrook Residences project in Merrimack, New Hampshire, I knew I wanted to be part of it. We rallied with Lynch Landscaping and it paid off! Last Saturday, thousands of thrilled children – all who were decked out in costumes – were able to closely inspect a few skid steers, a dump truck, a forklift, and a loader. We of course also brought along an arsenal of candy for the trick-or-treaters!

It was a great day, all focused on giving back to the community and the people who live, work and play in the Manchester area. Thank you to everyone who made the event such a success.
