University of Maine Harold Alfond Sports Arena and Shawn Walsh Hockey Center Additions and Renovations, MaineOn Wednesday, PC joined The University of Maine to celebrate the start of construction for major renovations to Harold Alfond Sports Arena and the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center. This project will further UMaine’s commitment to excellence in the state’s only Division I athletics program, strengthen gender equity and provide a preferred destination for high school sports championships, competitions and community events.

The enhanced Shawn Walsh Center will include new state-of-the-art locker rooms for the women’s and men’s ice hockey programs, a player development center with state-of-the-art sports medicine and strength and conditioning spaces as well as a 42-seat film room, new and renovated offices for coaches and support staff, and expanded lounges and equipment rooms.

The Harold Alfond Sports Arena will undergo upgrades to enhance the student-athlete and fan experience inside the historic building. Work includes a new entryway complete with an expanded concourse area housing dedicated ticket and concession sales spaces, the UMaine Hockey Hall of Fame and the team store.

The PC Construction team is excited to work with The University of Maine, WBRC and Crawford Architects, and all our trade partners to bring these exceptional enhancements to life for UMaine student-athletes, staff and fans.

Mid-Mountain Lodge at SaddlebackThe newest addition at Saddleback is now complete! The Nest, a new 2,500-square-foot ski-in, ski-out on-mountain dining experience is situated at 3,620′ in elevation and features an 80-seat dining area and 14-seat bar designed to easily transform into an event/wedding space. In addition to indoor and outdoor dining, the accompanying ski-up food kiosk allows mountain enthusiasts to place orders without stepping foot inside.

The building is designed to be environmentally conscious in the heart of a boreal forest, with large sliding windows overlooking the Rangeley Lakes region and a living roof covered in hay-scented ferns and native lowbush blueberries. Locally sourced materials include pine boards stained with linseed oil and pine tar used for the siding. In addition, the facility is built on posts instead of a poured foundation to minimize disruption of the watershed.

This project brought many interesting challenges. Construction was closely coordinated around the breeding season of the Bricknell’s thrush, one of North America’s rarest songbirds that breeds exclusively in the boreal forests. The winter months also required extensive coordination with mountain operations to utilize ski lifts and groomers for the transport of materials and personnel.

We are so pleased to have partnered with Saddleback to bring The Nest to reality. The Nest is open Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the 2023-2024 winter ski season. Be sure to visit the next time you are on the Saddleback slopes!

PC is pleased to announce that the Associated General Contractors of Maine has selected the Southern Maine Health Care Behavioral Renovation project to receive one of five Build Maine Awards. The award, which was granted in the Building Renovation Division, recognizes Maine’s top construction projects of the year.

The 21,000-square-foot Behavioral Renovation, located at Southern Maine Health Care’s Sanford facility, consisted of a complete renovation of an existing facility to house a 48-bed locked unit designed and constructed to behavioral health requirements. The facility, which provides care for adults in acute psychiatric crises, includes 24 semi-private rooms and features anti-ligature elements such as high-impact exterior windows, soft suicide prevention doors, rescue hinges and anti-ligature toilet accessories. Work also included infrastructure upgrades and renovations to the active emergency department to house five additional bays and space for security and offices.

This project is unique in nature because of the specialized needs associated with behavioral health. Throughout construction, the utmost attention was given to patient safety and keeping the existing facility operational. PC utilized a variety of methods to maximize success, including the implementation of Lean tools, mock-ups to ensure quality, multiple infection control barriers for patient safety, and off-hour scheduling to minimize impact to ongoing operations. Virtual inspections with the design team members and dedicated subcontractor support during COVID-19 restrictions were key to quality, schedule and safety adherence.

By October 2020, the facility opened its doors to patients with the most current behavioral health safety measures in place, all in a comforting environment. Most importantly, the facility helps meet a crucial need for the regional SMHC community.
