Lisa Beeler, Director of Business Development, Seacoast RegionThere’s something special about those initial weeks in a new role – they set the tone for your entire journey. As I complete my first month at PC Construction, I find myself settling into a new position and becoming part of a remarkable team that exemplifies what it means to build stronger, together.

The journey began in Vermont, where comprehensive training sessions and meetings with the management team provided a solid foundation. The project visits across Maine and New Hampshire have been particularly enlightening. Walking the jobsites with our team members, equipped with a hard hat, vest, and safety glasses, felt like coming home. These visits weren’t just about our active projects – they were about connecting with the people who make PC Construction exceptional.

One of the most rewarding aspects has been representing PC Construction as an employee owner at various industry events. The enthusiastic welcome I received from networking partners at MEREDA, Portland Chamber, and AGC events has been truly heartening. These connections reinforce the strong reputation PC Construction has built in the industry.

Looking ahead, my vision centers on strengthening and revitalizing key industry partnerships that will drive mutual success. I am committed to understanding our partners’ evolving needs and challenges and will work hard to develop mutually beneficial opportunities. What excites me most is the potential to bring out the best in these relationships. When partners truly understand and complement each other’s strengths, the results exceed expectations. This collaborative spirit, combined with PC Construction’s proven expertise, positions us perfectly for continued growth and success.

The support and encouragement from my new colleagues have made this transition remarkably natural, and I’m filled with optimism about what we’ll achieve together. The journey has only just begun, but it already it feels like I’m exactly where I’m meant to be. Here’s to the road ahead!

UVMMC Emergency Department Project in VermontThe PC team recently wrapped up a 3,000-square-foot renovation to the existing Emergency Department at the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC). The goal of the project was to construct a dedicated pediatric space within the Emergency Department and incorporate significant upgrades to maximize patient comfort and enhance staff amenities.

PC built five new whimsically-themed pediatric examination rooms and a secured waiting space dedicated to pediatric patients. Also completed were updates to the team station and major renovations to the existing patient check-in area and security office.

The project was completed in the midst of ongoing operations at Vermont’s largest and busiest medical center. PC coordinated all efforts to eliminate potential disruptions to patient care, including comprehensive wayfinding, sequencing of loud activities during off-hours and temporarily relocating several staff offices. PC also worked with the providers to coordinate partial hallway shutdowns to allow uninterrupted day-to-day activities.

This multi-phase project enhances UVM Medical Center’s emergency pediatric care by providing an inviting, comfortable environment in a segregated area tailored to caring for the region’s youngest patients.

Joe PicoraroAfter over 46 years at PC Construction, I am excited to announce I will begin the next chapter in January – retirement!

My journey dates back to May 1978. I had just graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Vermont and applied to a family-owned firm with three brothers at the helm. That one decision sealed my fate, connecting me to a group of dedicated construction professionals who helped me become what I am today.

My formative years were spent with our estimating department – the foundation of all projects and a key ingredient of project success. After graduating from a comprehensive engineer-in-training program, my journey would take me into the field and a plethora of markets, locations and project teams. I always challenged myself to evaluate my personal and professional path every five years – and every time, I came to the same conclusion. And the proof is a long, successful career with a great company.

The ultimate factor in my success over the years is, of course, the people in this great business. The relationships with my fellow employee owners, our incredible customers and project partners have truly made all the difference. My sincerest thank you to all of you.

I would be remiss if I did not include my family in this message. They supported my career in every way and were instrumental in creating a home that allowed me to thrive at PC. My wife and children are a part of every project I was involved with – and my love and thanks are with them. I’m so excited that they – and my eight grandchildren – will have my undivided attention in the years ahead!

Moving forward, all of our customers and partners in the Seacoast region will have the absolute pleasure of collaborating with Lisa Beeler, the newest addition to PC’s business development team. She is incredibly talented and exudes so much excitement for our industry, the projects, and relationships. Please give her a warm welcome!

University of Maine Shawn Walsh and Alfond Arena Renovations and Addition ProjectWinter has arrived in Orono, Maine, and PC Construction has made significant progress on the University of Maine’s Shawn Walsh and Alfond Arena Renovations and Addition project. As the University’s hockey programs near the midpoint of their 2024-2025 seasons, students, staff and athletes alike are starting to see a lot of change to their Shawn Walsh Center and the beloved Alfond Arena, which remains fully operational throughout the athletic season and the course of construction.

Structural steel crews have nearly completed erecting/decking, with roofing crews following right behind. As these two trades wrap up, the building will be temporarily enclosed for the winter, allowing interior work to progress towards the first phase delivery of the new locker rooms, coaches’ offices and film room. In total, the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center and Harold Alfond Sports Arena will undergo 31,000 square feet of renovations and 21,000 square feet of additions, providing significant enhancements to UMaine’s iconic ice hockey venue.

We are excited to deliver these enhanced facilities for UMaine’s student-athletes and fans! Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses.

Go Black Bears!

Western Carolina University visiting a PC Construction project siteLast week, we hosted a site tour for a class from Western Carolina University. The students’ courses currently focus on the areas of planning, equipment and project management, which made our large wastewater construction project the perfect place to see applicable action. The highlight of the tour was a deep excavation flanked by three cranes moving formwork, reinforcing steel and stone for backfill in addition to setting manhole sections for a vortex manhole.

We brought the group into the office trailer and conducted a Lean crash course to illustrate how the field team schedules upcoming work, inspections, and subcontractor collaboration using Nialli software and interactive smart boards. This provided a practical, hands-on application illustrating workflow navigation and effective field project management.

The students who attended the tour had great questions and positive feedback from the project visit, highlighting the importance of practical learning outside of the classroom and networking for their future construction career.

North Carolina Toy DriveI am so proud to be part of PC Construction’s team in North Carolina! The last few weeks have been a flurry of activity for myself and my fellow employee owners as we spearheaded a Hurricane Helene relief toy drive to spread cheer to the children of Western North Carolina.

In total, over $13,500 worth of gifts were gathered from PC employees, their families and our very generous trade partners and suppliers. All gifts were donated to the Black Mountain Home and Eliada.

The Black Mountain home had a landslide destroy all four of their recreational buildings, dining halls, and guest cabins. PC was one of several sponsors who provided gifts for the 63 children currently residing in the facility. While Eliada sustained much less damage, they currently have 467 children in their residence, ranging in age from newborn to 21 years. All children will receive two or three gifts from our donation alone, and we hope others participate to make this a Christmas they won’t forget!

Thank you to my fellow team members – Erica Baldwin, Erik Marshall, Bayden Wilson, Nick Swan and Joseph Berrigan – for jumping in to make this event a success. And a special thank you to all of our donors and partners who showed such kindness and generosity this holiday season, including but not limited to: Chinchor Electric, Beltway Paving, Universal Painting, WW Enroughty, Smart Electric, Cohrane Steel, Continental Fire & Sprinkler Company, Commercial Doors & Hardware, Womack Electric, Pleasant Mount Welding, Halliday Products, Inc., Lopez Rebar, American Layout & Land Surveying, LLC, Cardinal Building Systems, Noble Specialties, McDade Waterworks, Ferguson, Felker Brothers, Dixie Metals, Lake Electric, Fountain Electric, MB Haynes Electric, Llamas Coatings, Hickory Mechanical, Dickinson Hauling, Superior Mechanical, Piedmont Plumbing Group, Heyward of Charlotte, EW2 Environmental, Fortech, Revere Controls, Piedmont Automation.

Happy holidays from the North Carolina team!

AGC Vermont Best Builders AwardLast night, PC proudly accepted an AGC Vermont Best Builders Award for the Middlebury Resource Recovery Center (MRRC) project. The recognition, in the Environmental, New Construction category, highlights the exceptional efforts in bringing to life a project that not only transforms how organic waste is processed but also contributes to sustainability and renewable energy generation in Vermont.

The MRRC, located on a half-acre site in Middlebury, is a cutting-edge facility designed to convert food and beverage waste into renewable biogas. Through PurposeEnergy’s innovative Tribrid-Bioreactor™ system, the center processes approximately 80,000 gallons of organic waste daily, producing 1.014 MW of electricity for Vermont homes and businesses on a 24/7 basis. This environmentally focused project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by over 2,000 tons of CO2 each year, equivalent to eliminating 278 tanker truck trips each month.

The project’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond energy generation. The MRRC also plays a vital role in phosphorus sequestration, preventing over 60 tons of phosphorus from entering Otter Creek and Lake Champlain annually. Furthermore, the facility’s infrastructure supports local food and beverage manufacturers, such as Agri-Mark for Cabot Creamery and Vermont Cider Company, by offering an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution for waste disposal.

The project faced numerous challenges but by embracing a collaborative, transparent approach, we delivered a successful project with zero safety incidents.

Winning the AGC Vermont Best Builders Award is a proud moment for our team, and we look forward to the continued positive impact the MRRC will have on Vermont’s communities.

Mass Timber Maine ConferenceLast week industry leaders came together in Maine to discuss the use of mass timber in future building projects and learn about the drive to bring mass timber production to New England. Hosted by the Portland Museum of Art, this event stimulated forward-thinking ideas and dialogue to blend creativity in design and construction to optimize the use of CLT, Glulam and other mass timber products within design and our day-to-day lives.

Fueled by innovative discussions and out-of-the-box thinking, this conference was packed with short “Timber Talks”, where we heard a variety of perspectives on the importance of sustainability, climate change action, passive house, and the supply chain of mass timber. The discussions also focused on sparking a mass timber economy here in Maine.

Maine is the most forested state in the U.S. with 89% forested lands. Over time, the pulp and paper industry has declined, leaving a loss of identity and community in many of our rural areas. Utilizing Maine’s natural resources to stimulate the economy and provide a healthier environment while doing so, is a unique opportunity.

It was exceptionally rewarding to attend part of the conference at USM’s McGoldrick Center, a mass timber project completed by PC Construction in 2023. PC strives to promote sustainable building practices on all our projects and are excited to see a future that incorporates more mass timber in building design.

PC Construction Leadership Development Program AcademyLast week, 15 participants in PC Construction’s Leadership Development Program (LDP) gathered in Charlotte, North Carolina, for their annual Academy. Hailing from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, DC, North Carolina and Florida, the LDP engineers kicked things off with some team building at the U.S. National Whitewater Center. They worked together to complete a variety of challenges that required communication, problem solving and a lot of balance! This was a great way to break the ice and build team cohesion from the start.

The team spent the next day at one of our wastewater treatment construction projects where they interacted with a panel of former LDP engineers and toured the site guided by another recent LDP graduate. After lunch, we dove into DiSC profile styles and how we can use them to gain self-awareness and communicate more effectively in our roles. To wrap up the day, a panel of PC’s construction executives and vice presidents from along the East Coast joined the group to share their unique career paths and advice for the LDPs as they progress in their careers. With the day’s formal program concluded, we headed to Top Golf for some fun and networking.

The final day began with a session about PC’s core values, what they really mean and how they guide our actions across the company. To wrap up the Academy, we worked together to develop leadership statements, our “elevator pitches” about who we want to be and how we want to be seen as leaders.

The group was engaged and energized from start to finish, asking thoughtful questions and grasping every opportunity to learn and build connections with their peers. They make me excited about the future of PC!
